Website Guidelines for Search Engines Optimization

There are no quick fixes. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a methodical process that begins with creating a site with specific and relevant content. It is a combination of creating the best title, description and meta tags that correlate directly with the content on the page being optimized. It is setting up your website to be search engine friendly. Once a site is designed properly, a strategic placement strategy should be employed that includes manual submissions to the major search engines and directories. Sometimes, paid inclusion may be preferable and must be evaluated based on return on investment. This is ever-changing and your SEO professional must stay abreast of changes.

Website - Basic Guidelines

  1. Brainstorm to compile a list of the most relevant keywords and keyword phrases. These are terms you expect people will use when searching for your product or service.
  2. Write your page content based on these terms and position them so that the spider recognizes the content.
  3. Create your Title Tag using the same keywords.
  4. Create a Meta Description sentence, also based on the keywords.

Some Do's and Don'ts

  1. Do not repeat keywords or in any other way try to trick the search engine into "thinking" your site is relevant. This is considered spamming by the engines and can get you banned from inclusion.
  2. Develop content truly relevant to search terms
  3. Do not use automated URL inclusion programs as these are also considered spam by the major engines
  4. If you have multiple services or products that are not relevant to the search terms, consider creating a separate URL and optimize for that particular term. Registering a specific URL is inexpensive and can be set up to link directly to your primary site.
  5. Don't clutter your Meta tag with every known term for a service or product. It is a waste of time and may even have a negative impact.
  6. Keep your Meta Description specific; narrow the focus and make it less than 200 characters.
  7. Your Meta Title is second only to page content in importance to search engines. Be most careful in selecting this term and tie it directly to page content.
  8. Do not make your Meta Title your company name unless you are universally known, like IBM or Ford. Make it relevant to content.
